Safety First

I marvel at the fact
That I am never by myself
But at the same time
I am always

Alone

The men I choose
To allow into my life
Make me more lonely
Than I ever was before
More and more
I pick them because
They don’t want me

It is safe

So I don’t end up the woman
With the family photos with
Matching shirts on vacation
Whose man belongs to the
Entire goddamned world
So I am not in the blind position

Ever again

These men think
That I don’t know they’re jackals
Circling their next meal
I’m not the unsuspecting prey
I ask for their every

Menacing bite

None of those lies are mine
But I see them
A predator always needs
A fresh kill
Lose myself again
To another man
I never will
